Even the Pandemic has not Slowed Down the Philadelphia Drug Market
The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly affected all walks of life, and life may never quite be the same again, despite the development of several COVID vaccines. There is one aspect of life in Philadelphia that has, it seems, been completely unaffected by the pandemic – but this is not welcome news. The illegal drug market in Philadelphia has remained unscathed by the ravages of COVID-19.
When COVID first really hit in early 2020, some governments were quick to restrict access to their borders or even close them altogether. Many enforcement agencies predicted that this would see a reduction in the supply to problem areas all over the US of illicit narcotics. This may seem like good news, but reduce the supply of an in-demand product and prices start to climb, leading to desperate people taking desperate measures.
The Increasing Exposure of Drug Addicts to Fentanyl is a Serious and Deadly Problem
One way that drug suppliers have been coping with restrictions in the availability of natural opioids such as heroin is to cut the heroin supply with synthetic opioids that are easier and therefore cheaper to produce, such as fentanyl. Fentanyl though is between 30 and 50 times more potent than heroin, and therefore between 30 and 50 times more deadly.
Unsuspecting addicts buy heroin and are unaware that it has been cut with fentanyl, and so take their normal dosage, oblivious to the fact that they are injecting something that is far deadlier to what their bodies have become accustomed to. This often results in an overdose, and a fair percentage of such overdoses lead to death.
“As supply chains get disrupted, there’s going to be more unpredictability, more synthetics, more violence, because that’s what happens when drug markets get disrupted,” said Leo Beletsky, director of Health in Justice at Northeastern University. “The more constraints there are on the market, the more it’s going to mutate toward synthetic, cheaper, lab-produced drugs, where a few people can produce a lot of product.”
